The 2014 Lynch Moussas was actually more expressive than the 2014 Batailley on
the nose with lifted redcurrant, cranberry and wild strawberry scents mingling
with sous-bois and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a
keen line of acidity, well balanced with attractive smoke and tobacco notes
complementing the red berry fruit on the finish. This has good potential, a
Pauillac that is likely to be underappreciated by the market, yet to register
the improvement at the Casteja family's estate.
Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Lynch Moussas offers crisp and light leafy black fruit on the nose, tinged with sandalwood and dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, not a complex Lynch Moussas, but it offers satisfying cedar and bell pepper notes on the finish. Fine, if a little short and missing the density that I feel the Cast_ja family have imbued their wine since investments were made. Tasted February 2017.
The 2016 Lynch Moussas is a blend of 17% Merlot an 83% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at 48 hectoliters per hectare between 3 and 19 October. Matured in 60% new oak and the remainder one year old, this has a concentrated bouquet that offers tobacco-infused black fruit, briary and then with aeration, veins of pencil lead. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin cloaked in plenty of black fruit, quite spicy for Lynch Moussas with a touch of orange rind developing towards the finish. I appreciate the salinity on the aftertaste here. This is excellent and may well surpass the impressive 2015 last year.
